BACOLOD City – A barangay captain and his father were shot in Barangay Bagroy, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.
Village chief Jiovanni Yandog was hit on the left arm, while his 71-year-old father Faustino was wounded on the chest. Both were taken to the Bacolod South Hospital in Barangay Pahanocoy, police said.
Chief Inspector Anthony Grande, Binalbagan police chief, identified the suspect as Flordivico Belo Jr., 40, of the same village.
A heated argument ensued between Belo and Yandog’s brother Joenal around 7:15 a.m. on Thursday when the latter told the former not to put stones into a canal so as not to block water draining into a river, said the officer.
Belo drew a firearm of an undetermined caliber and shot Joenal but missed.
Joenal ran and sought help from Yandog and their father, who were at a store at the time.
Yandog asked Belo if they could talk things over, but he fired at him and his father instead.
Police said Belo had been shot, too, and was hit on the groin. He was taken to the Riverside Medical Center.
Yandog reportedly shot Belo, but he denied it. Police were still investigating how Belo was wounded as of this writing./PN
