BACOLOD City – Mayor Marvin Malacon wants every couple participating in mass weddings in EB Magalona, Negros Occidental to adopt a tree.
Couples joining the local government-sponsored mass wedding every Feb. 14 will be required to do so if the Sangguniang Bayan grants the mayor’s request to pass an ordinance on the practice.
Malacon stressed that it is one way for the couples to help protect the environment.
Some 69 couples exchanged vows during a ceremony that Malacon solemnized at the municipal gym on Tuesday, Valentine’s Day.
On Feb. 10, the couples — upon the request of Malacon — planted mangroves in Barangay Tuburan, EB Magalona.
Municipal Registrar Mercedes Recla said it was only during the Malacon administration that they did a mangrove planting as a prenuptial activity.
Malacon aims to have nine coastal barangays planted with mangroves.
“We have an obligation to help Mother Nature,” the mayor stressed.
Each newlywed couple was given 5 kilos of rice and tokens.
Special awards, like Early Bird, Oldest and Youngest, were also given to the deserving couples after the ceremony./PN
