KALIBO, Aklan – Street sweepers and garbage collectors are “unsung heroes” who work under extreme weather conditions to make this town cleaner.

As winners in the Sarok Short Film Festival are cited tonight at the Pastrana Park, the local government and the Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi) will also recognize the town’s cleaners for their role during the Ati-Atihan Festival in January.

At least 27 garbage collectors and 65 street sweepers were on duty 24/7 to clean up after merrymakers during the “mother of all Philippine festivals,” according to Kasafi chairman Albert Menez.

“The outdoor workers braved the cold, rainy weather and did not have enough sleep just to perform their jobs,” Menez said.

Sweepers were grouped into three shifts — 8 a.m., 5 p.m. and 12 midnight — to maintain cleanliness at the Pastrana Park, Magsaysay Park and the streets.

The General Services Office supervised them and provided them with broomsticks, waste baskets, dustpans, garbage bags, and other cleaning materials and supplies.

Mayor William Lachica called them “unsung heroes” with big roles to play during huge celebrations.

“Some of them have rendered 20 years of service, others hoping to feed their families on a daily basis and pay the tuition of their grown-up children, [one of them is] a husband who work to save for the expenses of her pregnant wife,” he said.

“The recognition will further motivate [them] to work harder and make them realize they have contributed to Kalibo’s development and progress,” said the mayor. “Without them, Kalibo will never be a better place to live and to do business in.”

Among the “best-performing sweepers/cleaners” are Cris Ricablanca, Ma. Theresa Damian, Eva Recamora, Elena Macahilas, and Christopher Macahilas. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
