MANILA — Students from low-income family and indigenous people communities may soon be provided with “electronic readers and tablets.”

Sen. Miriam Defensor–Santiago has filed Senate Bill 2330, or the “Electronic Books Opening Opportunity for Knowledge Act.”

The measure seeks the purchase of the electronic equipment, including digital and online content, for poor students.

Ten state universities and colleges will benefit from the grant, according to Santiago.

The program aims to introduce “interactive and adaptive digital learning tools” for teaching and learning, she said.

Ultimately, the measure aims to “reduce the cost of attendance for undergraduate students” and encourage college professors to incorporate new learning technologies into their classes, the senator added.

Also, the bill seeks the creation of an academic curriculum suited for the program that will be implemented under the Commission on Higher Education.

Santiago cited Article 14, Sections 1 and 2 of the Constitution in filing the bill.

“(The government) should protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels” and “establish an integrated system of education relevant to the needs of the people and society,” she noted./PN
