MANILA – Donnie Nietes will fight for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight belt against Eaktawan Krungthepthonburi of Thailand in April.
It is “90-percent” sure the fight will be held in the Philippines, with the Waterfront Hotel and Casino and the Cebu Coliseum as possible venues, according to ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer.
“There is a big chance it will be held in the country,” Aldeguer said. “We have a tentative date [on] April 29. There are some details that have to be ironed out but it’s already 90-percent (done).”
“But we are also open to fight in Thailand or China,” he added. “Yes, it could be dangerous, but Donnie has fought [three times] in Mexico, which is much tougher, and when he was younger, in Indonesia.”
The world flyweight title became vacant after Filipino boxer John Riel Casimero, who decided to move up to the super flyweight division, relinquished it last weekend.
Nietes, a native of Murcia, Negros Occidental with a 39-1-4 win-loss-draw slate, will aim for his third world title in as many divisions after previously holding the World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimum weight and light flyweight belts.
Krungthepthonburi, with a 22-3-0 win-loss-draw record, including 15 stoppage wins, is looking to bag his first world boxing title. He has defeated a number of Filipino boxers, including Ilonggos Jomar Fajardo and Lionel Legada.
Meanwhile Aldeguer announced that he plans to include WBO International featherweight champion Mark Magsayo and WBO International super lightweight titlist Jason Pagara in the undercard./PN
