MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers recovered from an early deficit to score a 2-1 victory over the University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP Season 79 men’s football tournament on Thursday night at the Molo Lorenzo Football Field in Quezon City.

AJ Pasion and John de Castro scored a goal each for the Growling Tigers, which finally barged into the win column after suffering defeats to the De La Salle University Green Archers and Ateneo Blue Eagles.

The Red Warriors surged to an early lead in the game courtesy of a goal by Nino Mallen in the 10th minute but the Growling Tigers was quick to recover with a conversion from Pasion with three minutes before halftime.

De Castro then put the Growling Tigers ahead in the 56th minute with a follow up from his own miss before clamping its defense on the Red Warriors to cap the come from behind victory.

There are four Barotac Nueva natives in the current UST roster in Jose Zaldy Abraham, Dexter Benecio, Darwin Busmion, Dionisio Busmion, and Kennth Tuzon.

Sana yung players kahit nanalo kami, sana tuluy-tuloy lang yung spirit, mabalik lang yung kumpiyansa nila. Maka-gain sila ng confidence, and at the same time, to put pressure rin sa other teams,” said Tigers Ilonggo head coach Marjo Allado.

In the other match, the Blue Eagles racked up its fourth consecutive victory this season by beating archrival Green Archers, 1-0, courtesy of the lone goal by Blue Eagles star Jarvey Gayoso.

Gayoso, who slipped past the defense of Iñigo Gonzales, scored from near the box in the 36th minute for his league-best fifth goal which turned out to be the Blue Eagles’ winning moment.

“I’m so happy sa result,” said Blue Eagles head coach JP Merida. “Playing against La Salle, napakahirap talaga. They followed the game plan. In the end, it was our defense pulled through.”/PN
