MANILA – The Cignal-San Beda Hawkeyes leaned on the hot hands of Ilonggo Byron Villarias to score a 109-79 victory over Blustar Detergent-Malaysian Dragons in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Villarias, uncle of former Ateneo Blue Eagles star Kiefer Ravena, led the way with 15 points, on the three-of-six three-point shooting, for the Hawkeyes, which tied the Café France Bakers at second place with a 4-1 win-loss slate.
Robert Bolick also contributed 15 markers, while Filipino-American Davon Potts and Benedict Adamos had 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Hawkeyes, which tallied its third straight win.
“Credit to the boys who played in the end of the second quarter and really played defense. They really wanted to play and that’s where the lead extended to 14,” said Hawkeyes head coach Teodorico Fernandez III.
After a tight first quarter where they held on to a 19-18 lead, the Hawkeyes went to work in the middle period, firing a 28-point second quarter to establish a 47-33 halftime advantage.
The Hawkeyes continued its hot shooting in the second half as it held on to a 77-56 lead before extending it to as high as 34 points at 104-69 courtesy of a Ranbill Tongco floater with just 2:21 remaining in the game.
Tristan Perez and Jason Melano, who was loaned by PBA team Blackwater Elite, finished with 29 and 15 points, respectively, for the Dragons, which suffered its fourth straight loss in as many outings.
In the other match, the Victoria Sports-MLQU leaned on the exploits of Robbie Herndon, Aris Dionisio and Ilonggo Cris Bitoon as it nailed its breakthrough win by shocking the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 76-66./PN
