BACOLOD City – Senior Superintendent Jack Wanky vowed to hold police stations to account for the series of robberies in the city.

The city police director stressed that ensuring safety and security is a responsibility law enforcers and civilians share.

Four robberies transpired in three barangays from Friday to Sunday (Feb. 17 to 19), police records showed.

An unidentified culprit barged into a variety store owned by Christopher Villanueva in Barangay Tangub yesterday. Eight packs of cigarettes, a mobile phone worth P12,000 and P7,000 cash were taken.

Another unidentified suspect robbed Jennifer Mabale, a resident of Barangay Singcang-Airport, of her belongings on Saturday.

Mabale was on board a trisikad at the Reclamation Area in Barangay 12 when the driver took the following from her at knifepoint: a mobile phone, an automated teller machine card and P1,500 cash.

On the same day a house in Barangay Estefania was robbed.

Among the items taken were an iPad, an Apple computer, an external memory drive, 14 pieces of $1 bill, and three pieces of $500 bill, the 61-year-old Daniel Fenton told Police Station 5.

Police identified the suspects as 18-year-old Angelo Sarad and a minor, both residents of Barangay Enclaro, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

They gained entry by destroying the window grills, initial investigation showed.

On Friday, P7,000 cash and speakers worth P1,000 were taken from a department store at the Plazamart in Barangay 12.

Chinese national Teoty Tan, owner of the 9KK Marketing, told the police the culprit forcibly opened the rollup door. They discovered the burglary around 6:15 a.m.

Wanky told Panay News he will recommend the “immediate relief” of police station commanders if similar incidents continue and “they cannot at least make corrective measures.”

The Bacolod City Police Office has 10 stations.

But Wanky noted that most of such incidents were cases of salisi — suspects just waiting for the opportune time to attack.

He urged the public to “at least be responsible enough” to protect their belongings and properties.

Wanky said these incidents may be considered alarming but not for those who are “responsible” and “security-conscious.”

While the police try to ensure public safety, protection from robbers should start from the people themselves, he said.

“Secure your belongings inside and outside their residences” and “never give [robbers] the opportunity to victimize you,” he stressed./PN
