MANILA – At least 49 people were reported injured after a passenger fast craft crashed into a barge in Mactan, Cebu, the Philippine Coast Guard said on Sunday.
MV Braquiel of 2Go accidentally hit the San Miguel Corp.-owned barge along the Mactan Channel around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, according to Coast Guard spokesperson Armand Balillo.
“The fast craft was heading to Pier 4 (in Cebu) when it hit the barge that was being pulled to the Mactan Channel,” Balilo said.
“We cannot establish yet if it was a collision, since if it was collision, it means the two vessels were moving when the incident happened,” he added.
Passengers of the fast craft were transferred to another fast craft at Pier 4.
Four of the injured passengers were taken to the nearest hospital, while the others were treated right at the pier.
The Coast Guard station in Cebu was still investigating as of this writing.
Balilo said the shipping companies involved were asked to submit their respective marine protests within 24 hours.
“Our people from the [Coast Guard Station in] Cebu will also talk to the captains of the fast craft and the barge to get more information,” he said./PN
