KALIBO, Aklan – Sixteen barangays were set to receive sanitary toilet bowls and fixtures from the municipal government.
The project was part of the Zero Open Defecation Program.
“Sanitary [toilet bowls] and fixtures [will be given] to about 400 residents … identified by our sanitary inspector,” Sangguniang Bayan member Cynthia Dela Cruz said.
She authored the resolution, passed on July 28 last year, urging the local government to implement the national health program.
The barangay councils of the recipient villages shall also help carry out the program in any way they can, she said.
“Kalibo already released last month more than a hundred toilet bowls and fixtures for the first three barangays,” said Dela Cruz, a pediatrician by profession.
Through the program, the local government aims to cover all residents without sanitary toilets in two years’ time.
Open defecation may cause various diseases, including diarrhea, amoebiasis, intestinal worms, typhoid, cholera, polio, and trachoma, health experts said./PN
