MANILA – The San Sebastian College Lady Stags pair of Grethcel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa earned an outright finals seat in the NCAA Season 92 women’s beach volleyball after sweeping the nine-game eliminations at the Subic Bay sands.
The Lady Stags pair completed the nine-game sweep of the eliminations after beating San Beda Lady Red Spikers’ Maria Jeziela at Maria Nieza Viray, 33-31, 21-14, on Saturday.
Aside from entering the finals outright, the four-peat seeking Lady Stags of head coach Roger Gorayeb is also armed with a thrice-to-beat incentive in the championship round against the survivor of the step-ladder semifinals.
“We have a goal of winning the beach volleyball crown again this year and we’re focused on accomplishing it whatever happens,” said Soltones, the three-time MVP in NCAA’s indoor volleyball.
No. 3 seed University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas and No. 4 ranked Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers are clashing in a knockout game for a right to face the No. 2 seed Lady Red Spikers, which owns a twice-to-beat incentive.
Meanwhile University of Perpetual Help Altas’ Rey and Relan Taneo smashed last year’s titlist Sam Damian and Alfredo Pagulong of Mapua Cardinals, 21-17, 21-13, to sweep their way to the men’s beach volleyball finals.
The Taneo brothers strung together nine straight wins to earn them another trip to the finals while giving them another chance of getting redemption after losing to last season’s eventual champion Cardinals.
The Las Piñas-based Altas awaits its finals foe, which could be among Lyceum Pirates, Cardinals and Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, which finished second to fourth with records of 8-1 (win-loss), 6-3 and 6-3, respectively.
The Cardinals and the Generals will collide in a knockout showdown in the first stepladder semis and the winner will play the Pirates, which boasts of a twice-to-beat edge for finishing as the second seed./PN
