ILOILO City – This year’s edition of the Paraw Regatta was better than last year’s despite the drop in the number of participating sailboats, according to the president of the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation, Ronald Sebastian.
There were 49 participating paraws this year, 11 boats short of last year’s 60 entries.
According to Sebastian, the competition this year was organized better than in previous years’ races so the drop in the number of participates did not affect the race on Feb. 19.
This year was the 45th edition of what is considered the oldest sailing event in Asia. It was held at Iloilo City’s famed Villa Beach.
“Kun lantawhon namon sa history, there were times nga nagadamo ang aton participants, may naganunbo man. But this year’s event was a success,” said Sebastian.
The foundation got many positive feedbacks from guests, tourists and even from the participants themselves, he said.
Next year, the staging of Paraw Regatta will be improved further, Sebastian said.
The “lighted paraw” contest will be continued, he added.
This year’s weeklong regatta was from Feb. 12 to 19. The 19th was the race proper – the highlight of the competition.
The days leading to the highlight saw the staging of various side events such as the Miss Paraw Regatta beauty pageant, beach volleyball, miniature paraw contest, dragon boat race, jobs fair, bodybuilding competition, and Pintay Layag (sail painting contest).
On the 19th while sailboats were racing, there was a body-painting competition and finals of the beach volleyball on the shores of Villa Beach./PN
