MANILA – The Filipino youth have been urged to register for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Elections slated for Oct. 23.
The SK Elections will coincide with the barangay polls.
“Now, more than ever, we must speak out, we must participate in electing our leaders,” said Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV.
Citing the Commission on Elections (Comelec) report, Aquino lamented the poor turnout of voter registration, with only 193,229 from January to Feb. 10 this year.
The Comelec is expecting six million new voters before registration ends on April 29.
“Let’s not waste our vote and let’s make the most of the SK reforms we fought for in Congress,” Aquino said.
The senator pushed for the passage of Republic Act No. 10742, or the SK Reform Act in the last Congress.
The new law raises the age limit of SK officials from 16 to 17 years old to 17 to 24 years old, which allows them to sign contracts and be capable of full accountability.
It likewise prohibits relatives of elected officials up to 2nd civil degree of consanguinity or affinity from seeking SK posts./PN
