BACOLOD City – Agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) – mostly farmers – in Negros Occidental must protect and defend their rights over the lands awarded to them.

How? Among others, they should promptly pay taxes annually as well as pay the amortization at the Land Bank of the Philippines, said Department of Agrarian Reform – Negros Island Region (DAR-NIR) director Stephen Leonidas.

Paying is part of the ARBs’ obligations as new landowners, he stressed.

Leonidas led the distribution of Certificates of Land Ownership Award (CLOAs) in Bago City Friday last week.

To protect their lands, ARBs must also not engage in ariendo (lease) system as it violates the conditions provided under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), he added.

DAR-Negros Occidental II distributed CLOAs to 145 ARBs in Bago City. They are now the new owners of an aggregated 90.8164 hectares of farmland consisting of various landholdings in different barangays of the southern Negros city.

These landholdings included those previously owned by Janice Toralba of Barangay Tabunan with 12.4466 hectares; Lopue’s Realty Corp., 2.69 hectares; JL Espinos Realty Corp., 22 hectares; and CODECO, 21.1826 hectares, all in Barangay Dulao.

Other landholdings were from Lucy Araneta Solinap of Barangay Busay, consisting 6.4271 hectares; Sotero Carmona of Barangay Taloc, 5.3528 hectares; Sylvia Torre, 7.68 hectares; Rubu Pablador, 6.22 hectares; and Woodrow Araneta, 6.8 hectares, all in Barangay Ma-ao.

Mayor Nicholas Yulo said the distribution of CLOAs was an accomplishment for both DAR and the ARBs.

Yulo said the city government will continue to support the programs of the DAR for the benefits of the city’s residents.

“We will provide all the possible assistance in order to uplift the quality of lives of these beneficiaries”, he added.

The mayor also sought the help of DAR in urging the new landowners to pay their taxes promptly for the benefit of the city. (PNA)
