ILOILO City – The Department of Health (DOH) and World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention for Tobacco Control invited the Iloilo City government as one of the validators for the Search for Red Orchid Award.

“We are pleased with this opportunity to be part of the validation team as this solidifies our stature as a smoke-free city,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force (ICAST) executive director Iñigo Garingalao will represent the city government as validator.

“This is a rare opportunity that a local government unit (LGU) is invited to be a validator in national level. All of our efforts and enforcement really paid off,” he said.

As national validator, ICAST’s expertise in making LGUs smoke-free will be highlighted, Garingalao stressed.

He also highlighted the support given by Mayor Mabilog for the enforcement and sustainability of anti smoking campaign.

The regional validation will start next week.

“After the regional validation, those who will qualify will be endorsed to the national level wherein we will again be part of the team of validators,” said Garingalao.

Iloilo City was a Red Orchid Hall of Famer from 2012 to 2014.

The Red Orchid is an award given by the DOH to LGUs, government offices, government hospitals, and DOH Centers that are 100 percent tobacco-free. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
