MANILA – Four spikers from Western Visayas will banner the 25-woman Philippine women’s volleyball pool set to compete in various international tournaments later this year.

Leading the way for the national squad are Ilonggas Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Abigail Maraño, Guimaras-native Jovelyn Gonzaga, and Negros Occidental’s Genevieve Casugod.

Also comprising the national volleyball team pool headed by coach Francis Vicente are a crew of players from the Philippine Superliga (PSL), Philippine V-League and collegiate leagues UAAP and NCAA.

Among the PSL stars in the pool are Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Maika Ortiz and Gretchel Soltones of Foton; Mika Reyes and Rhea Dimaculangan of Petron; Rachel Anne Daquis of Cignal HD; Fatima General of Generika; and Denise Lazaro of Cocolife.

Picked by Vicente from the Philippine V-League teams are Alyssa Valdez of Creamline, as well as Myla Pablo and Elaine Kasilag of two-time champion Pocari Sweat Lady Warriors.

From collegiate teams are De La Salle’s Kim Fajardo, Dawn Macandili and Kim Dy; Ateneo’s Madeleine Madayag and Kat Tolentino; University of the East’s Roselle Baliton and Kath Arado; National University’s Jaja Santiago; University of Santo Tomas’ Marivic Meneses; and Lourdes Clemente of NCAA’s Perpetual Help.

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. officials led by president Joey Romasanta and vice-president Peter Cayco made the announcement during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday at the Golden Phoenix Hotel in Pasay City.

 

The daily training of the national women’s team will start Wednesday where Vicente will begin the process of choosing the players that will be fielded to the SEA Games on Aug. 19 to 31, the Asian U-23 in Thailand and the Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Manila from Aug. 9 to 17./PN
