A call to action

IN A TRAGIC and deeply distressing incident that unfolded on a social media livestream, a 36-year-old man known as “Onyok” took his own life in San Rafael, Iloilo. This incident has once again cast a spotlight on the alarming prevalence of suicide cases. As we grapple with the profound loss of another life, it is imperative that we address the underlying issues and take concrete steps to prevent such devastating occurrences.

Onyok, a habal-habal driver, had been battling personal demons, as reported by the San Rafael Municipal Police Station. His story is a poignant reminder that many individuals silently wrestle with their inner demons, often without the support and resources they need.

The heart-wrenching reality is that Onyok’s story is not an isolated incident. Countless individuals grapple with mental health issues, often in silence due to the persistent stigma surrounding mental health. This stigma can be a formidable barrier that prevents people from seeking the help they need. It is high time we dismantle this stigma and foster a more compassionate and understanding society.

Onyok’s case sheds light on several critical aspects that need our immediate attention. The availability and accessibility of mental health services are of paramount importance. It is disheartening to see that many individuals do not receive the mental health support they require. The government must prioritize the development of comprehensive mental health care systems that cater to the diverse needs of our communities.

Raising awareness about mental health issues is vital in reducing stigma. Educational campaigns should be launched at all levels of society to promote open dialogue about mental health and to encourage people to seek help when needed.

Community-based initiatives can play a crucial role in identifying and assisting individuals who may be at risk. Training community members to recognize signs of distress and connecting them with appropriate resources can save lives.

Strengthening family and social support networks is essential, too. Loneliness and isolation can exacerbate mental health issues. Families and friends should be encouraged to provide emotional support and to intervene when they suspect someone is struggling.

Too, promoting the availability of suicide prevention hotlines and crisis intervention services is vital. These services can be lifelines for individuals in crisis, offering them immediate support and guidance.

The tragic loss of Onyok’s life serves as a painful reminder that we cannot afford to remain indifferent to the rising tide of suicide cases. We must combat this social phenomenon with the urgency and compassion it deserves. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that no one suffers in silence, and that everyone has access to the mental health services.

In this challenging time, reaching out to those around us, showing empathy, and offering a helping hand can make a world of difference.
