THE ILOILO Airport is a vital gateway to not only the city and province of Iloilo but also the broader Western Visayas region. It spurs economic activities, tourism, and cultural exchange. Recent calls from local business leaders and officials underscore an urgent need: the repair and modernization of this key infrastructure.
The current state of the Iloilo Airport, with its limited capacity and outdated facilities, is a significant barrier to the region’s potential. As Engr. Terence Uygongco, president of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo, Inc. (FCCCI), aptly noted, the airport’s condition severely hampers Iloilo’s ability to promote itself as a premier tourism destination and a UNESCO Gastronomy City. The limitations of the airport not only reflect poorly on Iloilo’s image but directly impact its economic vitality.
The necessity of a modernized airport in Iloilo cannot be overstated. A well-equipped and efficiently managed airport would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, enhancing the attractiveness of the region to investors and tourists alike. The impact of such improvements would ripple across various sectors, including hospitality, real estate, retail, and services, further solidifying Iloilo’s position as a leading economic and cultural hub.
Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City has also voiced concerns, citing the subpar conditions passengers endure — humid environments, non-functioning escalators, and overall inadequate facilities. More than mere inconveniences, these are deterrents to the flow of tourists and business travelers who are vital for local commerce.
The allocation of funds from the national government, such as the P190 million, for the airport upgrade, is most welcome. Yet progress seems slow. The community’s frustration is palpable, particularly when fiscal allocations do not translate into visible improvements.
Looking forward, the pursuit of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for the airport’s redevelopment appears to be a promising path. The involvement of three major conglomerates signals a robust interest in transforming the Iloilo Airport into a state-of-the-art facility. Such partnerships could accelerate development while ensuring the airport meets international standards.
However, transparency in the PPP awarding process is crucial. As advocated by FCCCI, clarity from the Department of Transportation regarding timelines and processes is essential to maintain public trust and ensure that the project does not falter. The private sector’s eagerness to contribute to the airport’s redevelopment is a positive sign, but their efforts must be matched by governmental clarity and commitment.
