Manila’s slums are well-known for their thousands upon thousands of makeshift houses with plywood walls and zinc roofs. Children may be seen climbing garbage heaps in search of food, bottle tops, and screws. Mothers are nursing their babies despite the obnoxious smells. Nighttime is when criminals and wild animals roam free. Many areas in the Philippines still feature the stark contrast between the rich and the poor. On one side, we have skyscrapers and world-class structures whereas just a few kilometers away lies shanties and makeshift homes.
Curiously, however, in many strategic places are rows of colorful houses – homes with a total living (and expandable) space of 22 to 24 square meters that feature separate sleeping quarters, a toilet and bath, and include environmental features for better heat absorption and passive ventilation. The houses are also designed and built well compared to broad-based commercial housing.
A home has remained elusive for many Filipino families but thanks to the initiative by Gawad Kalinga, the brainchild of Antonio Meloto, this social enterprise is making waves in Philippine society.
The big picture is to eradicate poverty for five million families by 2024.
With the help and corporate social responsibility initiatives by both local and global corporations based in the Philippines, that dream is fast becoming a reality.

Last September 7, 2023, NEARSOL representatives, Carl Villaluz (NEARSOL Regional Director for Marketing), and Jon Caballero (Managed Services Director/APAC) endorsed funds to Gawad Kalinga Executive Director Daniel Bercasio at the GAWAD KALINGA GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS Brgy. Daang Bakal, Mandaluyong City.
With this milestone, NEARSOL and Gawad Kalinga are now set to launch the construction of 10 houses with a groundbreaking ceremony on September 18, 2023, at New Lucena, Iloilo.

In addition to the alleviation of poverty, it is also Gawad Kalinga’s goal to help spur economic activities in every GK community.
Thus, every cluster of homes built is considered a “Nucleus Community” wherein the sponsoring corporation (or any organization that wishes to help) can do so by providing training.
This is very much aligned with NEARSOL Cares, NEARSOL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
