THE FUTURE may seem uncertain, especially with the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). However, this does not mean we cannot harness AI to work for us and reap its potential rewards. Many innovative solutions that can transform our society are within our grasp.
Karl Kendrick Chua, managing director for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Ayala Corporation, emphasizes that there is no prosperity in the presence of inequality. Yet, it is possible to âgive every Filipino an equal opportunity to succeedâ through the transformative, technology-enabled solutions rapidly shaping society today.
Speaking to the 132 graduates of the University of the Philippines Diliman National Graduate School of Engineering during their recognition rites on August 18, Chua highlighted both the pitfalls and opportunities in an AI-powered world. More importantly, he urged the 2024 cohort to reflect on how to use their education to benefit people and the planet.
Drawing from his extensive experience, including his roles as former Socioeconomic Planning Secretary and senior country economist at The World Bank, Chua shared insights on social inequalities and challenges. He described potential AI use cases to empower citizens to demand better government services, improve airport immigration processes and public transportation, support farmers, reduce corruption, and enhance education through internet accessibility.
In his current role at Ayala, Chua exemplifies how businesses can use technology to address societal pain points. âWe aim to use data science and AI to improve our understanding of customersâ and various stakeholdersâ needs and provide more data-driven and customized responses,â he said. By responding better to the need for lower-priced, higher-quality, and more sustainable goods and services, Ayala hopes to contribute to a more equitable society.
Ayala Corporation has been actively integrating AI across various sectors to drive innovation and improve efficiency. Here are some notable AI initiatives:
Ayala Land
* Construction and Quality Control: Ayala Landâs subsidiary, Makati Development Corporation (MDC), uses AI and drone technology for construction and quality control inspections. This approach has significantly reduced inspection times and costs while improving accuracy.
