The realization

ON MONDAY, I travelled to the northern part of Iloilo to meet my clients. I had to wake up as early as four in the morning and take a bus ride a quarter before six.
The travel wasnā€™t that easy. It was my first time to travel to the most distant part of Iloilo province. I had with me all my books and researched papers plus the braveries and confidence to face clients and whoever wanted to see me.
The preparation wasnā€™t only about the knowledge I am going to impart to my clients but also the attitude and appearance I am eager to deal with. You know, sometimes, we people have the tendency to ā€œevaluateā€ others based on ā€œface value.ā€ Yes, I prepared both ways ā€“ internal and external.
After two hours and a half of travel, I was welcomed with big smiles and enthusiasm. The way my clients treated me was way beyond what others would usually do. No, I am not generalizing. It is a fact we must face sometimes.
When I see and meet this kind of people, my heart melts. Why? These people are very genuine and unpretentious. They donā€™t need load of words to say how true they are because their action speaks louder than their words. These are the people we cannot say no when they ask for help. I consider this as one of the perks of lawyering.
When I was in the bus going back to the city, I pondered on these thoughts: The legal profession is not all about the profession itself where we practice what we learned in our four years in law school. It does not limit us in the four corners of a courtroom. It includes the society as a whole. It is also a vocation ā€“ the natural ability to help others.
For me, the greatest pursuit in legal profession is filling in the space between where I am now and where I see my clients happy and confident. At the end of the day, I feel that the choice to become a lawyer and helping others is what makes me happy.
