ILOILO City – Traffic auxiliaries are getting more aggressive in running after traffic violators. Public utility vehicle drivers are anxious.
A “citizens’ patrol” will be formed to monitor the performance of the traffic aides, said Raymundo Parcon, president of the Iloilo City Loop Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (ICLAJODA).
Both abusive and lazy traffic auxiliaries will be reported to the Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office (TMTRO) and the media.
Parcon said the “citizens’ patrol” will gather evidences against these traffic auxiliaries and these may include photographs and videos.
“Kami mismo nga mga lideres malibot sa pagkuha sang mga ibedensiya kun sa diin sila nga area, nagaligoy kag kun ano ang ginahimo nila,” said Parcon.
Traffic aides were given a quota of at least 50 arrests this month. The city government assured the public that there will be fairness in the apprehensions.
“If we found out there are abuses, we will surely discipline them,” said City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
He advised motorists with complaints against traffic aides to file a report at the Office of the City Mayor through the Customer Care Center located at the seventh floor of city hall.
“Get the name of the traffic aide and always remember the time, date and location where you are apprehended. We also advised them to report the said incident before they pay at the TMTRO,” added Galvez.
The city administrator discouraged the public from bribing traffic aides during the apprehension.
“There are no violators and apprehensions only if our motorists follow rules. Giving of anything to public employees is tantamount to bribery,” he said.
In a bid to restore order on the streets, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog also bared a plan to give incentives to traffic enforcers who apprehend traffic violators.
Some traffic enforcers make few arrests and giving incentives may motivate them to perform better, explained Galvez.
Mabilog bared this plan after a recent visit to Metro Manila. He observed that the traffic problem was being addressed by traffic enforcers there.
“The mayor was told that they were given incentives or share out of the fines imposed on apprehended traffic violators,” said Galvez.
Galvez, however, made it clear that an ordinance should be passed by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) to legalize the plan.
“Should the SP pass such ordinance, the city government will make sure that it will not be subjected to abuse,” said Galvez.
Traffic enforcers arbitrarily apprehending drivers will be punished, he said.
“The arrests must be in accordance to what is correct, legal and lawful,” stressed Galvez. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
