ILOILO City – Team AC and Team Gwapo emerged as champions in the 85th Iloilo Charter Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament held recently at the Jaro Covered Gym here.
Team AC leaned on its balance attack to capture the women’s volleyball division title after defeating the Central Philippine University Golden Lions in a tightly-contested gold medal match.
Roslyn Dusaran was hailed as the women’s division Most Valuable Player and Best Server, Joy Mae Deximo as Best Middle blocker, Nicole Deala as Best Opposite and Joanne Espinosa as Best Coach.
The Golden Lions, meanwhile, did not go home empty-handed in terms of individual awards with Ashley Jane Dela Cruz being named as Best Libero, Daniella Louise Eguico as Best Outside Spiker and Eugene Piosca as Best Setter.
University of San Agustin, meanwhile, salvaged a bronze medal finish in the competition as they defeated Guimaras in the battle-for-third place game.
Team Gwapo, on the other hand, reigned supreme in the men’s division following a dominant victory over Central Philippine University Golden Lions in the championship match.
Team Gwapo almost swept the individual awards with Jason Labuyo as MVP and Best Opposite, Edmar Jaravilla as Best Libero, Gefred Caoyanan as Best Middle Blocker, Kent Sabando as Best Outside Spiker, Deo Amparado as Best Setter and Patricia Villanueva as Best Coach.
Miles Atienza, meanwhile, was the lone awardee for the Golden Lions after being hailed as the tournament’s Best Server.
Just like in the women’s division, University of San Agustin ended with the bronze medal in the men’s division as they turned back Ignite-CVC squad in the battle-for-third place match.
The week-long volleyball tournament, which is in line with Iloilo City’s Charter Day celebration, has drew a total of 16 teams—10 in the women’s division and six in men’s event./PN
