Adamson prevails over UE in UAAP women’s volley

MANILA – Adamson University Lady Falcons snapped a four-game losing skid with a 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 victory over University of the East Lady Warriors in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Rookie Shaina Nitura led the way with 18 points on 17 attacks and one block to go with five excellent digs and one excellent reception as the Lady Falcons improved to a 3-5 win-loss slate.

Mayang Nuique added 11 markers, coming from eight attacks, two service aces, and a block; Jen Villegas contributed 10 points; and Barbie Jamili ended with nine points for the Lady Falcons.

Down 12-16 midway through the third set, the Lady Falcons went on a 6-0 scoring run — two attacks from Nuique, a service ace from Villegas, and errors from the Lady Warriors — to take an 18-16 lead.

The Lady Warriors tied the score for the last time at 19-all via a conversion from Beatrice Zamudio, but the Lady Falcons banked on late connections from Eloi Dote, Red Bascon, and Nitura to seal the win.

“Kailangang maglaro kami as one team. Kung may mag-fall down, kailangan may sumuporta, and we are thankful na nag-step up din ‘yung iba naming players,” said Negrense JP Yude, head coach of the Lady Falcons.

KC Cepada finished with 10 points on eight attacks, one block, and a service ace, while Nessa Bangayan and Riza Nogales had nine and eight, respectively, as the Lady Warriors dropped to a 0-8 record.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles secured a thrilling 15-25, 25-23, 27-25, 30-32, 16-14 victory against University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to kick off their second-round campaign.

Lyann de Guzman led the way with 25 points, including 23 attacks, one block, and one service ace, along with 17 excellent receptions and 13 excellent digs as the Blue Eagles notched their second straight win for a 3-5 record.

AC Miner contributed 19 points, comprising 17 attacks and two blocks, while teammates Zey Pacia, Negrense Jihan Chuatico, and Yvana Sulit finished with 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively, for Ateneo./PN
