Global Cebu FCā€™s Rufino Sanchez attempts a left foot shot during their 2018 AFC Cup game against Yangon United FC on Tuesday night. AFC

MANILA ā€“ Rufino Sanchez drained a last-gasp goal as Global Cebu finally got into the win column of the 2018 AFC Cup with a 2-1 victory over Yangon United at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

With both teams knotted at one goal apiece, the Spanish striker won a penalty in the 94th minute and converted off the spot moments later for the Cebuanos to surge for good.

The Tuesday night victory was huge for Global Cebu as it kept it in contention for the top two spots in Group G ā€“ which constitutes for a spot in the zonal semifinals ā€“ with four points on one win, one draw and two defeats.

After misfiring in its early attempts, Global Cebu finally scored a goal in the 79th minute with Darryl Roberts draining a header from a miss shot by Dominic del Rosario.

Global Cebu was unable to hang on to the advantage as Yangonā€™s Kyi Lin caught the Philippine sideā€™s defense napping to score his own version of a header in the 90th minute.

ā€œThis victory is very important to us. We canā€™t afford to drop points in our remaining games. We need to win against the top team in our group,ā€ said Global Cebu head coach Marjo Allado.

ā€œYou can just imagine our desperation to get the 3 points. The remaining games would be very difficult but we will do our best,ā€ said Global Cebu team captain Patrick Deyto.

Even with the defeat, Yangon United remained on top of the group with 9 points on three victories and a loss. Bali United of Indonesia and FLC Thanh Toa were second and third places, respectively./PN
