ILOILO – Following the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 6’s confirmation of a price increase in pork throughout Western Visayas, how are pork prices faring in the province of Iloilo?

According to the Provincial Veterinarian Office (PVO) as of Nov. 13, pork prices in 43 municipalities and one component city range from P320 to P400 per kilo.

“The prices are driven by supply and demand,” said Dr. Darel Tabuada, head of the PVO.

He also cited the impending Christmas and New Year celebrations.

As of the Nov. 6 swine inventory, 75,478 heads of hogs remain in the province, a decrease from 203,672 heads since September 2022.

The last inventory in September 2022 recorded 277,421 heads of hogs. This November 2023, the number dropped to 75,478 heads, equating to a 33.12 percent sufficiency level.

However, Tabuada clarified that consumers might not feel the impact of the limited pork supply as hogs have been shipped in from other provinces from January to November this year. The numbers are as follows:

* Aklan – 75 heads

* Antique – 2,257 heads

* Guimaras – 12 heads

* Negros Occidental – 9,363 heads

* Negros Oriental – 2,280 heads

* Oriental Mindoro – 1,077 heads
