BACOLOD City – A healthcare worker of the city government of San Carlos in Negros Occidental tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Days before he was found to be a carrier of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the patient went to a cock derby in the neighboring town of Calatrava on Jan. 16.

It was still unclear how the 64-year-old man contracted the virus but local authorities had since launched a wide-scale contract tracing.

Mayor Renato Gustilo over the weekend revealed the health worker was a resident of Barangay Palampas. He was hospitalized after manifesting COVID-19 symptoms such as loss of taste and difficulty breathing.

Gustilo urged all individuals or residents of San Carlos City who attended the cockfighting at the Laguda Cockpit Center in Calatrava to immediately get in touch with the local government unit.

The management of Laguda Cockpit also shut down their establishment for disinfection and contract tracing.

As of Jan. 24, Negros Occidental’s cumulative cases of COVID-19 hit 6,587 since recording started in March last year.

But with 6,227 cases having recovered and 179 deaths, the region’s active cases currently stand at 178./PN
