KALIBO, Aklan – A bill seeking the creation of the Aklan Airport Authority (AAA) that would manage the Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (Boracay Airport) in Malay, Aklan and the Kalibo International Airport here has been filed.

The proposed AAA would be an attached agency of the Department of Transportation.

“The facilities of Kalibo and Caticlan airports must be improved to allow for better services offered to tourists visiting Boracay Island,” said House Bill No. 1522’s principal author, Cong. Teodorico Haresco Jr. of Aklans’ 2nd District.

More tourists visiting Boracay means more revenues, a better economy and more job and financial opportunities for the people of  Aklan, he added.

The AAA is proposed to have a board of 11 members, including representatives from the private sector, the governor of Aklan, the Secretary of Finance, the Secretary of Justice, the Secretary of Tourism and the Commissioner of Immigration.

The Kalibo airport has equipment that allows for the safe night landing of airplanes both domestic and international. It currently serves five daily flights from South Korea and seven domestic flights from Manila.

The Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, also known as Boracay Airport or Caticlan Airport, is currently serving domestic flights from Cebu, Clark and Manila./PN
