ILOILO – Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary Emmanuel Piñol is visiting the municipality of Miag-ao today.
He is turning over checks to farmers in line with DA’s Production Loan Easy Access Program (PLEA).
PLEA is a non-collateral credit program to help farmers buy seeds and fertilizers. It has a six percent interest rate per year.
The distribution of checks will be done at JRBB Hall at 9:30 a.m.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said Miag-ao farmers growing bulb onions and garlic would be availing themselves of PLEA loans.
Sen. Loren Legarda, chairperson of the Senate committee on finance, would be accompanying Piñol, together with DA’s High Value Crops and Rural Credit undersecretary Evelyn Laviña, DA’s Agricultural Credit Policy Council executive director Jocelyn Alma Badiola, and DA regional executive director Remelyn Recoter.
Just this Oct. 29, Piñol led the groundbreaking of a P6-million solar power irrigation system in Dingle town.
He met with farmers for a dialogue prior to the groundbreaking of the irrigation project in Barangay Tabugon.
The project covered a minimum of 10 hectares out of the 50-hectare production area of the barangay.
At present, 13 hectares of the total production area are irrigated while 37 hectares are identified as potential irrigable production area.
Piñol had been pushing for the solar-powered pump which was “easy to operate and maintain.”
The solar-powered pump could continuously operate for five to 10 hours daily. It is also suitable for use in remote watershed and rain-fed areas.
A model of the said facility was showcased during September’s Makina Saka Expo in Barangay Hamungaya, Jaro.
Next year, nine solar-powered irrigation systems will be installed in Region 6./PN
