Levon Aronian and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave defeated their respective opponents in the first day of the quarterfinal knockout matches of the Airthings Masters being played at the chess24.com server.
In the first set of the two-set, four-game each set quarterfinals, Aronian scored against Hikaru Nakamura, 2½-1½, on one win and three draws while Vachier-Lagrave smashed an adventurous but rather erratic Wesley So, 3-1, on two wins and two draws.
The other two quarterfinal matches ended in 2-2 scores. Magnus Carlsen traded wins and draws with Daniil Dubov for a 2-2 count, while Ian Nepomniachtchi and Teimour Radjabov drew all their four games for a similar 2-2 count.
Aronian and vachier-Lagrave now need only to draw the second set of their quarterfinal matches to advance to the semifinals, while Nakamura and So – teammates at Team USA – are in a must-win situation to force a play-off that consists of 2 blitz games, followed by an Armageddon game if necessary.
