ILOILO – The provincial government has launched the construction of a “Resilience Hub” in Ajuy town to bolster disaster preparedness and response efforts in the province.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. and Mayor Jett Rojas led the groundbreaking ceremony on March 19, a significant step in strengthening local disaster management.
A joint initiative of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and the Ajuy Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the facility will serve as a command center equipped with vital resources, rescue equipment, and trained emergency responders. It aims to enhance response capabilities not only in Ajuy but also in neighboring towns.
The move comes in response to the province’s vulnerability to natural disasters, particularly typhoons. In October 2024, Typhoon Kristine affected 147,000 individuals across the province, with Ajuy recording the highest number of damaged houses at 1,919.
Governor Defensor said the Resilience Hub embodies the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening disaster response and preparedness. Beyond serving as a response center, the facility will also function as a training ground for community-based disaster risk reduction programs, equipping residents with essential skills to protect themselves during emergencies.
Mayor Rojas emphasized the hub’s significance in enhancing public safety amid the growing threat of climate-related disasters.
The project reinforces Iloilo’s proactive disaster management strategy, ensuring communities are better prepared to face emergencies and build long-term resilience./PN
