BORACAY ā The Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) is boosting its facilities as economic growth continue in this world-renowned island.
Akelco general manager Engineer Alexis Regalado said they will upgrade and add submarine cable lines for the 20-MVA (Mega Volt Amp) Caticlan Substation.
Contractors are processing necessary permits for the upgrade.
Boracay, despite earning criticisms due to environmental degradation, continue to attract more tourists.
Because of this, new hotels are set to be built in the island.
A consortium of companies led by property developer DoubleDragon Properties Corp. has already started the construction of the ābiggest hotelā in the country in terms of room count.
Furthermore, Regalado said they are considering remedial measures to minimize power interruptions in the island and the rest of the province.
āUpgrading the Lezo Substation is nearly one-hundred percent accomplished,ā he added.
Korea Power Corp. donated to Akelco a 15-MVA power transformer for the Lezo Substation.
It will replace the 5-MVA transformer used to supply power to Numancia, Lezo, Malinao, Makato, and portions of Madalag and Tangalan.
Stakeholders have been complaining of frequent power interruptionsin Boracay.
Akelco Institutional Development Department manager Roger Orillos and Akelco Board of Directors member Rod Quimpo said in separate interviews that they have received information that a private firm is planning to be an independent power producer in the island (IPP).
āBut we have been telling our member-consumers to stand guard and not allow (the operation of) IPP in the province,āOrillos said.
Aside from Aklan, Akelco also supplies power to the nearby Antique towns Pandan and Libertad./PN
