KALIBO, Aklan – Provincial Board members were investigating brownouts in Aklan and how they could affect tourism and businesses.
Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) officials were asked to appear during an inquiry set this month, said Nemesio Neron, energy committee chairman.
Board members wanted to know why the province has an on-and-off power supply and to act on complaints from businessmen and consumers about unscheduled power interruptions, Neron said.
Tourism was not the only one affected, the Board member said.
“Appliances, air-conditioning units and computers in offices and homes are at risk of incurring costly damages due to power quality issues,” said Neron.
Akelco distributes electricity to consumers in Aklan, including Boracay Island, and the municipalities of Pandan and Libertad in northern Antique.
This year the power distribution utility’s peak power demand was projected at 47.591 megawatts (MW).
Akelco sources its power requirements from Panay Energy Development Corp., Green Core Geothermal, SPC Island Power Corp., Panay Power Corp., and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.
As of June 1 the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines estimated the supply in Visayas at 2,102 MW, while the power demand was 1,880 MW and power reserves, 222 MW. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
