KALIBO, Aklan – The province of Aklan is in its effort to boost agriculture amid the enhanced community quarantine imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist is striving to distribute vegetable seeds to farmers to enhance the supply of vegetables in the province should the quarantine get extended, Aklan Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Emmanuel Soviet Russia Dela Cruz, SP committee chair on agriculture, said in a radio interview.
The vegetable seeds are varieties that are easy to grow and mature faster, he said.
Meanwhile, the chairman said that per recommendation of the Department of Agriculture, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has allowed unhampered farming and fishing activities as well as to exempt farmers, fishermen, farm workers and agri-business personnel from lockdown or travel ban.
Dela Cruz also underscored that the province has sufficient food supply.
He said that during a recent meeting with the heads of the National Food Authority (NFA) and other concerned agencies here, he was assured that Aklan has enough supply of basic needs while the province is placed under quarantine.
He said NFA has enough stocks of rice and palay inside its warehouse and at private or leased warehouses.
The province of Aklan is currently under enhanced community quarantine by virtue of Executive No. 20, Series of 2020 issued by Gov. Florencio Miraflores to protect the people against the pandemic.(with a report from PIA-6 Aklan/PN)
