Aklan dengue cases surge 49 percent

KALIBO, Aklan — Dengue cases in Aklan rose during the first seven months of the year, most of which were recorded in this capital town.

They surged by 48.77 percent to 604 this year from 406 last year, Provincial Health Office (PHO) records from January 1 to July 22 showed.

Kalibo posted the highest number of cases with 132. It was followed by Malay with 78 and Banga with 60.

Most of the patients were aged 11 to 20 years old — 224, or 37 percent of the total number of cases.

Dengue patients aged 21 to 30 years old numbered 141, while those aged 1 to 10 years old numbered 119, PHO records showed.

More than half of dengue patients were male (325), records also showed.

Numancia had 42 dengue cases; New Washington, 35; Altavas, 30; Tangalan and Madalag, 27 each; Nabas and Libacao, 24 each; Balete and Makato, 19 each; Ibajay, 17; Malinao, 15; Batan, 14; Lezo, 10; and Buruanga, eight.

July posted the highest number of dengue cases with 152, while April and March had the lowest, with 28 cases each. January posted 102; February, 71; and May, 55.

Meanwhile, there were 80 suspected measles cases in the province from January 1 to July 22, according to PHO.

The number increased by 344.44 percent from 18 last year, said the PHO. Malay topped the list with 17, followed by Kalibo with 16.

Moreover, typhoid fever cases in the province also rose by 99.44 percent to 353 this year to 177 last year. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
