AKLAN – This province’s para-athletes nabbed six gold medals in the swimming events of the eighth edition of the Philippine National Para Games 2024.
The swimming competition was held in Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
Carl Hilario of Kalibo Integrated Special Education Center (KISEC) in Kalibo town ruled the men’s 100m butterfly S14 (intellectual impairment) with a golden finish of 1:21.31.
A proud son of Mambog, Banga town Hilario clocked 1:04.55 in the men’s 100 freestyle S14 to secure the gold.
He also clocked 2:31.80 men’s 200m freestyle S14 for the gold.
The 18-year old triple-gold winner is heavily favored to join the Para Games national team.
Meanwhile, Claire Calizo from Colongcolong, Ibajay town bagged the gold in 200m freestyle, while Joven Ibuno, native of Osman, Malinao town, also secured the gold in 50m freestyle and the silver in 100m freestyle.
Shanelle Jean Monserate of Malay Elementary School in Malay took the gold in 50m freestyle and the silver medals in 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
Cristina Dela Cruz, also of KISEC, clinched the silver in 100m run and Angel Gordolan of Numancia claimed the silver medals in javelin throw and discus throw.
Edgee Alonsagay of Lamberto H. Tirol National High School in Yapak, Malay secured the silver in 50m freestyle.
Shyra Sumagingsing of Ibajay Central School in Ibajay, Aklan also got three bronze medals in 100 meter women, long jump and shotput for visually impaired T13 (low vision) category.
Additionally, Jesserey Lubrique, Kate Cyros Marco, Rain Ashley Macabales, and Gordulan won the silver in 4x100m relay, while Edwin Villanueva of Malay took the bronze in 200m individual medley.
Marco also nabbed the gold medal in 1500m run.
The 2024 Para Games of the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled took place from November 10 to 14, 2024, bringing together over 900 student-athletes across the country.
The competition featured nine sports – table tennis, swimming, boccia, chess, badminton, wheelchair basketball, athletics, archery, powerlifting – for athletes with disabilities./PN
