Aklan polls generally peaceful despite indiscriminate firing, ‘vote-buying’

KALIBO, Aklan – The conduct of the synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections
on Monday in the province was “generally peaceful” despite reports on indiscriminate firing
and vote buying, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Aklan.
“All of the precincts in the province opened on time and all the candidates have been
proclaimed [winners,” said Comelec-Aklan spokesman Chrispin Raymond Gerardo.
Vote-buying activities were reported to have happened in Ibajay and Nabas towns.
An indiscriminate firing incident was reported in Barangay Cawayan in New Washington on May
13, the eve of the election day.
“Based on police investigation, the indiscriminate firing incident was election-related. No
suspect has been arrested yet but we expect somebody will be filing an affidavit,” Gerardo said.
Senior Inspector Jerick Vargas, Nabas police station head, said at least three residents were
willing to file a complaint against a suspected vote buyer in the town./PN
