KALIBO, Aklan – “Mom, would you lend me some cash for my cell phone load? I’m using my salary to pay for my dentures.”

These were what Harvey Rebustes of Barangay Linabuan Norte told his mother Remedios on Monday. The following day, the 23-year-old restaurant helper was found dead at the Aklan River.

How and why Rebustes ended up lifeless and floating at the river at the boundary of barangays Poblacion and Mina in the municipality of Lezo remain a mystery to the authorities as of this writing.

Rebustes, who worked in a restaurant along the Kalibo-Iloilo highway bypass road in Banga town, had multiple stab wounds in the body, Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) of the Aklan Police Provincial Office said.

His co-helper, 21-year-old Franklin Idorot, said Rebustes attended a birthday celebration of a “text clan” mate in Barangay Poblacion after work on Monday night.

“We were about to sleep when someone called him on his cell phone,” said Idorot, who stays in the restaurant with Rebustes.

The 19-year-old Jeremias Ilagan Jr., Rebustes’ “Barkadahan” text clan mate celebrating his birthday, told the police Rebustes went inside their house but left after 15 minutes.

Around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Rebustes’ body was found floating a few meters from the Aklan River bank.

Police suspected the victim was killed elsewhere and thrown into the river.

Chief Inspector Ulysses Ortiz, SOCO chief, said they found 12 stab wounds in his hand, leg, head, face, and back.

Relatives positively identified the body through the three star tattoos on his neck and the word “Harvey” on his wrist.

According to Remedios, her son went home on Monday afternoon to take a bath before leaving again for work.

“We asked me to lend him some cash for his cell phone load,” the mother said. “He told me he was using his salary to pay for his dentures.”

Police continue to investigate. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
