BORACAY – Some 300 workers from 16 towns in Aklan will be deployed to this famed beach destination on April 26 – the first day of the island’s six-month closure.
The workers will help in the rehabilitation of Boracay, which the President last month called a “cesspool” due to its sewage and other environmental problems.
“Sila ang gigiba sa mga structures para sa widening ng 6.2-kilometer road sa isla,” said Niven Maquirang, administrator of the Caticlan jetty port.
The workers will have a vehicle convoy from Kalibo to Caticlan jetty port in Malay on Thursday morning.
“Sila ang mangunguna sa pagtibag na mag–uumpisa sa (Barangay) Manoc-Manoc hanggang (Barangay) Yapak in preparation sa pagpasok ng DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways),” added Maquirang. “Nakaantabay na rin ang mga trucks at barges na hahakot sa debris sa mga gigibaing structures.”
Malinao mayor Wilbert Ariel Igoy, president of the Aklan Provincial Mayors League, earlier said the provincial government has asked them to send volunteers for Boracay’s rehabilitation.
“Their allowances may be sourced from both the budget of the local government and the provincial government,” Igoy said at the time when the deployment of the workers was not yet final.
The mayors have agreed that once in the island, the workers will be housed in public schools.
In June – when classes start – they will be transferred at the covered gyms of barangays Balabag and Manoc-Manoc. (With a report from Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
