MANILA – A university in Aklan province and a private company will work with the government in building a cargo vessel expected to improve the maritime industry, Malacañang said on Monday.

The hybrid trimaran cargo vessel project costs P76 million, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will fund the project.

With a modern design and environment-friendly features, the vessel can harness energy from ocean waves, Roque said, citing the DOST.

“Steel will be used in building the vessel to guarantee higher structure efficiency and better wave resistance,” he told a Palace press briefing.

Involved in the project are Aklan State University, Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and Metallica Shipyard.

Expected to be completed by 2020, the hybrid cargo vessel can accommodate “a hundred passengers, four vans and 15 motorcycles,” Roque said.

Metallica Shipyard was tasked to provide vessel design and specifications.
