MANILA – Cherry May Regalado was the lone bright spot for the Philippine pencak silat team that competed in the 18th Asian Games Invitational Tournament from Feb. 11 to 15 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A native of Balete, Aklan, Regalado dominated the semi category Tungal event. The win also assured Regalado a spot in the national team for the Asian Games this August.

“Ang pagkabigo ay hindi dahilan para sumuko. Ang pagkapanalo ay hindi nangangahulugan na iyon ang dulo,” the beauty queen-athlete wrote on Facebook after the match.

Aside from Regalado, the Philippines also won four gold medals in other events – from decathlete Aries Toledo and taekwondo jins Kirstie Elaine Alora, Keno Anthony Mendoza and Keybert Lee Lumbania.

Toledo, the reigning Southeast Asian Games champ, amassed 6,659 points to beat Sri Lankan rival Ajith Kumara Rajakarunawala (6,413).

Alora copped gold in women’s +67kg over Hong Kong bet Tsan Wai Ying 8-6. Mendoza edged Korean Moon Jin Soo 4-2 in men’s -63kg while Lumbaria crushed Indonesian Nicolas Armanto.

Bago City, Negros Occidental native Roden Ladon, meanwhile, settled for a silver medal in boxing.

Thirty-seven Filipino athletes participated in the tournament./PN
