Aklan’s inflation rate up to 2.2% in 2017

KALIBO, Aklan – The inflation rate of Aklan in 2017 picked up 2.2 percent, higher compared than 0.6 percent in 2016, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported.

The inflation rate is the annual change in consumer price index.

The rate increase was attributed to the upward adjustment in prices of eight of eleven commodity groups – alcoholic beverages and tobacco (6.7 percent); furnishings, HH equipment, and house maintenance (3.8 percent); transport (3.0 percet); food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.8 percent); recreation and culture (1.4 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (1.4 percent); clothing and footwear (1.1 percent); and restaurants and miscellaneous goods and services (0.4 percent).

Slower price adjustments were observed in education (-0.6 percent), health (-0.1 percent) and communication (-0.1 percent).

The month of December registered the highest annual average inflation with 3.5 percent, followed by November with 2.8 percent, and April with 2.7 percent.

The lowest inflation rates were in January and July with 1.3 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively.

The increase in prices in food and non-alcoholic beverages were attributed to faster increments observed in fish (9.1 percent), vegetables (6.0 percent), meat (5.1 percent), corn (2.0 percent), fruits (2.0 percent), non-alcoholic beverages (1.6 percent), oils and fats (1.1 percent), flour, cereal preparation and related products (1.1 percent), milk, cheese and eggs (0.3 percent), and bread and cereals (0.1 percent).

Decline in price indices were noted in food products NEC such as spices (-4.0 percent), sugar and related products (-2.1 percent), and rice (-0.1 percent).

Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet Catubuan said the data are collected twice a month in identified stores or establishments in Aklan./PN
