MANILA – Outgoing United States Ambassador Philip Goldberg was partly to blame for President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for a “separation” from the United States, according to Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
“One of the problems is the US and Ambassador Goldberg refuse to admit that he is part of the problem,” Cayetano told Malacañang reporters recently.
Cayetano shared that Goldberg met all the presidential candidates, except Duterte, in the last elections because the US official kept on changing the schedule and making it difficult for the meeting to push through
“He made a mistake during the campaign in handling the candidates. He met all of the candidates and reported to the US. I suppose that is the procedure, I do not know for a fact,” Duterte’s vice presidential running mate said.
The senator also slammed the ambassador for his comment on highly-politically charged issues during the elections, which influenced the vote choice of the 3.5 million Filipino-Americans.
“[Ambassador Goldberg] continued to treat Malacañang as if he can tell the Philippine President what to do… The messenger was part of the problem… He’s interfering with our local politics, with how things are being run here,” he also said.
Cayetano said he will write the foreign affairs department a letter to complain Goldberg’s statement on the alleged “unpublicized” trip of the senator and Transportation secretary Arthur Tugade to China last June.
“What business does the US ambassador or any ambassador have monitoring trips or criticizing whether it’s unpublished – unpublicized or publicized?” the senator asked./PN
