MANILA – Alaska Aces recovered from a poor first half to score a come-from-behind 97-83 win over the shorthanded Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Trailing 36-44 at the half on Sunday night, Aces started its run at the onset of the third quarter behind Chris Banchero and Calvin Abueva to come to within 49-52. Aces gained the lead 55-52 on inside hits by Joachim Thoss and Jvee Casio.

It was all Aces since then as it surged to a 70-58 edge via consecutive inside conversions from Vic Manuel. Ginebra rallied to within 8 but Aces raised the lead to 73-63 heading into the fourth.

“Our defensive energy in the third quarter went up notches,” said Aces head coach Alex Compton. “Offensively, we settled down and hit shots at the right spot, at the right moment.”

In the final quarter Alaska went for the finishing run behind Manuel and Abueva to build its largest lead 85-67. Kings came to as close as 12 points but late hits from Casio sealed the win for Aces.

Manuel led the way with 18 points – 14 coming in the second half – for Aces, which registered its third consecutive victory and moved up to a 3-2 win-loss card, tying with TNT KaTropa.

Thoss added conference-high 17 points while Casio and Banchero contributed 14 and 13, respectively, and Abueva and rookie Jeron Teng combined for 18 for Alaska.

Aljon Mariano finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while Kevin Ferrer, Japeth Aguilar and Earl Scottie Thompson had 12 points each for Kings (2-2), which played without Gregory Slaughter, Joe Devance and Arthur Dela Cruz./PN
