KALIBO, Aklan – An alternative port was built at the northern part of Boracay Island to decongest the existing port and the main road traffic.
The Aklan Jetty Port administration set up the port at the far end of Station 1 of the White Beach.
It opened for operation Wednesday. It will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A rubber pontoon was installed to serve as docking area for the sea vessels of hotels and resorts in the area.
Aklan Jetty Port administrator Niven Maquirang said this is seen to cut down the number of vehicles going to and from the Cagban Jetty Port, thereby reducing traffic by 20 percent to 30 percent.
The alternative port will be used temporarily as cleanup operations in the island are ongoing.
Traffic congestion is one of the problems in the island that the government is currently trying to solve.
Moreover, the local government of Malay will inventory all vehicles in Boracay, said Vice Mayor Abram Sualog, also the head of the Municipal Tricycle Franchising and Regulatory Board.
The local government has previously prohibited the use of golf carts along main roads in Boracay. (PNA)
