IN the wake of the controversial scuffle between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia’s Boomers, Kris Aquino has become a fierce defender of the Philippine team, saying they have “suffered enough” in the face of a stream of criticisms.
The outspoken actress-host has gone as far as extending her hand to start a friendship with Gilas player Terrence Romeo, who has similarly been vocal about standing by his actions to fight for his teammates.
Aquino initiated the conversation through a comment on Romeo’s Instagram post containing his statement about the brawl, in which he apologized to the supporters of Gilas for what happened, but also said he would do it all over again.
“Gusto kitang kaibiganin,” Aquino told Romeo.
Romeo replied: “Same here, ma’am. I’m humbled po. Salamat po sa support.”
Aquino then echoed a portion of Romeo’s statement about never leaving a loved one behind: “Ganyan ang pananaw ko sa buhay – pag pamilya o kaibigan, lalong-lalo na sa gipitan, walang iwanan. You’ve been raised well by your parents. Nag-sorry ka, pero pinaintindi mo nang klaro ang paninindigan mo.”
“Maraming salamat po, ma’am,” the basketball player responded. “It takes one to understand one. Keep supporting Gilas po. God bless you and your family.”
Aquino’s comment came hours after she, on her own Instagram page, shared a slideshow of statements about the so-called “basketbrawl” which she agreed with – all in defense of Gilas. She coupled that with her statement praising the team’s “unity” and “bayanihan,” and urging support for the national team. (ABS-CBN News)
