MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) leadership has been urged to institute reforms in the organization.
“If you are not ordered to resign from PNP, and then reform the PNP,” said Senate Minority Leader Ralph Recto in a statement.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has called Police director general Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to resign following the abduction and killing of South Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo inside Camp Crame.
But, President Rodrigo Duterte said de la Rosa should keep his post because he still has the police chief’s “complete trust.”
Recto also suggested a “major reshuffle” to purge the national police of bad cops.
“Ignore the political patrons of officers. Your motto should be: ‘Bato, bato sa langit, ang matanggal huwag magalit,” the lawmaker from Batangas said.
De la Rosa should likewise acknowledge that PNP’s problem is “not PR in nature, but institutional,” he added.
“The bad press you are getting is due to bad cops. Thus, it can’t be solved by diversionary tactics but by taking out deeply-rooted reasons,” Recto said.
Recto said there is a need to provide PNP with modern equipment to “improve police mobility, visibility and response time.”/PN
