KALIBO, Aklan – The municipal government is looking for new measures to better implement Republic Act 8749, or the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999, amid complaints from locals in this capital town.

The Sangguniang Bayan (SB) have received several complaints regarding smoke belching and waste burning, said Councilor Cynthia Dela Cruz who chairs the SB committee on environment.

Some of the perpetrators were motorists and farmers – mostly uninformed – the complaints stated.

Kalibo is one of the busiest town in the country being an entryway to Boracay . Cargo trucks and transport services for foreign and local tourists, among others, are present in the town.

“Right now, we noted increasing incidence of bronchial asthma both to children and adults, and more cases of lung cancers,” a local doctor said.

The public, especially the farmers, were reminded to refrain from burning solid waste.

Smoke emission testing machines were bought for enforcers to use.

The SB is reviewing the Municipal Environment Code of 2011, the ordinances on no smoking and vaping, reducing smoke belching, and encouraging motorcycle operators to choose four-stroke motorcycles instead of two-stroke./PN
