SAN JOSE, Antique – The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) wants to have a unified communication system in Antique to improve preparedness during emergencies and disasters.
NTC-6 regional director Ernesto Monroy said each Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) has its own network, but there are problems communicating during disasters because of the lack of a unified communication system.
“We are looking at the possibility of all of the municipalities in Antique to have a single network in the event of incidents, while maintaining their individual networks,” Monroy said.
One of the challenges that MDRRMOs encounter is the difficulty in communicating with various sectors, particularly with local government units in times of disasters and emergencies.
Monroy said in Iloilo’s 2nd District and in the towns of Cabatuan and Oton, rapid emergency telecommunications teams were created to improve communication.
The areas in the province being mulled as the site for the system are Hamtic town and Mararison Island.
But Monroy added that the “actual establishment” of the unified system will be up to the MDRRMOs. He stressed that the NTC will help when it comes to “technical assistance, legal advice and initiative.” (With PIA/PN)
