BACOLOD City – Residents of Barangay 31 in this city are complaining about the foul odor of ammonia emanating from the building of Occidental Ice Plant and Cold Storage.
Village chief German Bullolaza Jr. said they already sought help from the City Health Office (CHO) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to conduct an inspection inside the facility.
Bullolaza added several residents near the plant site complained of dizziness and headache caused by the foul smell.
The village chief said the chemical odor came from the ice plant’s sewerage pipes.
“Nagrequest kami sang bulig sa CHO kag DENR para manginsafe man ang kabuhi sang mga pumuluyo diri,” he stressed.
According to DENR, ammonia is a chemical used as a refrigerant or coolant for manufacturing purified tube ice.
It is used in small amounts as a restorative for fainting or headaches, but can cause similar symptoms when people are exposed directly to large concentrations.
Direct contact can cause irritation at the least or can burn body parts at high levels./PN
